Photographer's Statement

"I am a photographer of ordinary moments in other cultures. My photographs are overwhelmingly portraits, from the full-frame face captured on film after spending days with a family, to the silhouette of the man walking through a darkened bazaar clicked in an instant of opportunity. The photos are, by and large, tightly composed, often have large dark areas for strong graphic qualities, and convey self-contained stories. A more difficult issue is, why people and their moments? The people and thin slices of their lives brim with edge-to-edge character that can please the eye, and information that can provoke thoughtful consideration and conversation.   And, as I ever learn from others' photographs of different lands and peoples, I hope that other folks can learn from mine.

"During my 2007 travel I used a digital camera in addition to a film camera dedicated to black & white film.  I found the well-celebrated shooting advantages of digital to be true, the greatest of which is the ability to immediately share images with the with the folks I photograph.  I need to work with the medium  more, but I expect that digital will remain in my arsenal of tools.   All image products - whether film, scanned film, or digital - are full frame or nearly so.  Manipulation of the digital files is strictly limited to brightness, contrast, white balance, and color balance - the same tools that are available in the darkroom.   Over the past several years I have increasingly favored black and white photography, which is better suited  to my experiences and images.
