Although the Kurds are overwhelmingly Muslim, there are generally fewer constraints placed on Kurdish women than in many other Islamic cultures. Even in the more traditional settings, where Kurdish women defer to the men in public, in the privacy of their homes they exert considerable influence. This is not at all to suggest that constraints do not exist. In pockets of extreme conservatism still there are honor killings and suicides born from deep-rooted customs and beliefs. From villages to cities, all the Kurdish women I have had the privilege to meet are strong.
