R'ya Taza is the most prosperous of the three Yezedi villages just east of Mount Aragat. Tital, whose grandson is pictured here, served with the Russian army in Afghanistan in the late-seventies. Afterwards he earned a college degree and returned to his village to teach primary school where he remains. Except for the bangs, this 3-year old grandson has yet to have his hair cut. Armenian Yezedi tradition requires that a boy's Sheikh - each family has a specific Sheikh - must cut his hair for the first time, normally at 9 months of age. Tital's family Sheikh has been in France for 4 years, but he was expected to return to R'ya Taza in October.
